The Force Report
You've never seen this kind of database of police use of force in N.J. And neither has the state. Or county prosecutors. Or your local department. Because it didn't exist. Until my colleagues at NJ.com built it. Here’s the trailer I made for the project - nj.com/force #NJForce

Guns, an American Conversation retrospect
A coalition of American newsrooms owned by Advance Local launched “Guns, an American Conversation” with the journalism organization Spaceship Media. The project convened people on opposite sides of the social and political spectrum to engage in a dialogue around the polarizing topic of guns. The project began with an in-person workshop for 21 participants in Washington, D.C., on March 24 and 25, at the Newseum who worked with facilitators skilled in bringing people together across conflicting points of view. It then moved to an online Facebook conversation where 130 more people joined the conversation.
Guns, an American Conversation
“Guns, an American Conversation,” is a new approach to public service journalism that will bring together Americans of diverse perspectives and experiences in a closed, month-long moderated Facebook group to discuss guns and other related social issues, according to a news release from Advance Local.

Guerilla Haiku Movement in Orange: Metering community engagement through street poems
2013 New York Emmy Award Nominee for Arts: Program Feature/Segment
Armed with colorful chalk and something to say, The Guerilla Haiku Movement hit the streets of Orange, New Jersey and filled them with haiku poetry. The four hour event was meant to help build community through creativity and interpersonal connections. Participants are encouraged to get as many people as possible from the town involved in making poetry. Though the sidewalk chalk will eventually fade, organizers hope the sense of community that stems from the activities won't. The Littlest Victims: Violence and Innocence
It was a gun that would put Hutchins in prison. It would be another gun that would change his life and bring him closer to his 4-year old son, Quadir. Of the nearly 400 people that were shot in Newark last year, two were younger than 5 years old. Quadir Hutchins was one of those children.
